Why should I hire a labor doula?
Studies have shown that women supported by a doula in labor were...
26% less likely to give birth by cesarean section
41% less likely to give birth with a vacuum extractor or forceps
28% less likely to use any analgesia or anesthesia
33% less likely to be dissatisfied or negatively rate their birth experience
Will a doula replace my partner?
A good doula never forgets that the birth is the parents experience, not hers. She is there to support your wishes. Many partners find that they are more actively involved in the birth when a professional supporter is present.
Questions to ask during your labor doula interview
1.Are you certified? By which organization? What kind of training have you had?
2.How long have you been in practice as a doula? Approximately how many births have you attended?
3.What care providers have you worked with? How many homebirths have you attended? In what hospitals have you attended births?
4.What do you provide for your services?
5.What is your philosophy about childbirth? How do you support women and their partners throughout labor?
6.Will you discuss our birth plans and the role you will play in supporting me?
7.May I call you with questions or concerns before and after the birth? How can I contact you in an emergency?
8.Do you work with one or more backup doulas (for times when you are not available)? May I meet them?
9.When do you join women in labor? Would you come to our home or meet us at the birth center or hospital?
10.Will you meet with us after the birth to review the labor and answer questions?
11.What is your fee? Is any part of your fee refundable.
12.Can you provide references?
